Your Garments Care

Spotty Otter Garment Care

How do I wash my Spotty otter gear?

Caring for your Spotty Otter Waterproof Garment – It’s Easy Peasy

All of our Waterproof and Fleece-Lined garments are easy to wash at home and, if cared for correctly, will come up looking great time and time again.

Wear it day and night, week after week. Wait until your child has gone to bed and you can sneak it off the peg and then:

  • Put in the washing machine, fastening any zips or clips. For best results we recommend Nikwax or Grangers Technical Wash products, but you can also use pure soap flakes;
  • Wash at 40°c or less;
  • Remove from the washing machine and either hang to dry or tumble dry on a low heat. Applying heat by tumble drying waterproof garments can actually revitalise the outer surface water repellency and is actually recommended for best results.
  • Stand back and marvel at how it looks just like new.

General Notes regarding the Washing of Waterproof Garments:

  • Regular and correct washing is recommended as waterproofs do not function fully if the fabric pores become clogged with dirt. Don’t do it for the sake of it, but wash if the garment is dirty as it will ensure that your garment lasts longer and functions optimally.
  • After many, many washes (or if washed incorrectly), the water repellent coating on the outer surface will deteriorate on any waterproof garment. This does not mean that the inner membrane or coating, and therefore the waterproofing, of the garment is affected. It means that the water may no longer bead and run off and that the garment ‘wets out’ on the outer surface. Even these garments can be brought back to life by using Nikwak or Grangers re-proofing products with very good effect.
  • Never, ever, ever, use a washing liquid or fabric conditioner on any down or waterproof/water resistant garment. These liquids coat the outer surface and ruin the water-repellent finish.

Caring for your Spotty Otter Down Garment – It’s Easy Peasy

All of our down garments are easy to wash at home and, if cared for correctly, will come up looking great time and time again.

Wear it day and night, week after week. Wait until your child has gone to bed and you can sneak it off the peg and then:

  • Put in the washing machine, fastening any zips or clips. For best results we recommend Nikwax or Grangers Technical wash products, but you can also use pure soap flakes;
  • Wash at 40°c or less, ensuring there is a spin cycle;
  • Remove from washing machine and DO NOT PANIC – your garment will look wet, flat and unhappy until your dryer has performed its magic;
  • Tumble dry on a low heat for a prolonged period of time. Even when you think it feels dry, give it even longer to plump up all that lovely down. For extra help you can add a dryer ball or a soft toy to help bounce the down around;
  • Stand back and marvel at how it looks just like new.

Never, ever, ever, use a washing liquid or fabric conditioner on any down or waterproof/water resistant garment. These liquids coat the down and the outer surface, causing the down to clump and ruining the water-repellent finish.
