Be part of RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch

Posted by Spotty Otter on 22nd Jan 2026

This weekend, the world of birds is calling! The RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch is the perfect chance for kids (and grown-ups) to slow down, look around and see who’s visiting your garden, local park or even your window.

No need to be a bird expert as this is all about exploring, noticing and having fun. It also helps the RSPB to survey which bird species are the most popular, are growing or are in decline. You never know who might flutter by, a cheeky robin, a busy sparrow or even a clever magpie!

Here’s everything you need to know to get started:

When Is the Big Garden Bird Watch?

This year, the Big Garden Bird Watch takes place from Friday, 23rd January to Sunday, 25th January 2024. Pick any hour during this weekend to observe and record the birdlife in your area!

Why Join In?

The Big Garden Bird Watch is more than just bird spotting; it’s a vital citizen science project. By sharing your results, you’re helping the RSPB monitor bird populations and identify species in need of support. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to slow down, unwind, and immerse yourself in nature with the whole family.

Get the Kids Involved

Listen carefully
Can you hear a blackbird singing, or a wood pigeon cooing? Try to identify the birds by sound using our Fact File, it’s like nature’s music!

Spot them
Use our Bird Spotting Activity Sheet to record your sightings.

Count together
Keep track of the birds you see, then share your totals on the RSPB website. Every sighting helps with their national survey.

Tips for Attracting Birds

Set Up Feeders: Fill bird feeders with seeds, peanuts, or fat balls. Place them where you can easily see them but away from potential predators.

Provide Fresh Water: A shallow dish of water can be a lifeline for birds, especially in frosty weather.

Create a Welcoming Habitat: Leave areas of your garden wild with shrubs or hedges where birds can shelter.
