Celebrate World Environment Day with Your Kids!

Posted by Spotty Otter on 4th Jun 2024

World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5th, is a fantastic opportunity to teach kids about the importance of protecting our planet. Here are some fun and educational activities to help your children understand the significance of this special day.

1. Nature Scavenger Hunt

Create a list of natural items for your kids to find in your local park or garden. This could include leaves, flowers, rocks, insects, and more. It's a great way to explore nature and learn about different species. You can also use pre-prepared lists or print off our free scavenger hunt resources from our Nature Club content. 2. Plant a Tree or Garden

Get your kids involved in planting a tree or starting a small garden. Explain the importance of trees and plants in producing oxygen and supporting wildlife.

3. Crafts with Recycled Materials

Encourage creativity by making crafts from recycled materials. This could include building bird feeders from milk cartons, creating art from bottle caps, making planters from old cans or creating art with leaves and sticks.

4. Eco-Friendly Pledge

Have your kids come up with their own pledges on how they can help the environment. This could include things like reducing plastic use, recycling, saving water, or biking instead of driving.

5. Educational Movies and Books

Watch a nature documentary or read books about the environment. Some great options include "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss or "Our Planet" on Netflix.

6. Clean-Up Activity

Organise a local clean-up event. Equip your kids with gloves and bags, and head out to clean up a local park or beach. It's a hands-on way to show the impact of littering and the importance of taking care of our surroundings.

7. Visit a Nature Reserve or Farm

Spend the day visiting a local nature reserve or farm. Many places offer educational programs about local wildlife and conservation efforts.

8. Build a Bug Hotel

Help your kids create a bug hotel in your garden using natural materials. This provides a safe space for insects to thrive and is a great way to learn about different types of bugs and their roles in the ecosystem.

Why It's Important

Teaching kids about the environment from a young age instills a sense of responsibility and respect for nature. By participating in these activities, children learn the importance of sustainability and how their actions can make a positive impact on the world.

This World Environment Day, let’s inspire the next generation to be stewards of the Earth! ??
