Celebrating Sign Language Week with Spotty Otter
Posted by Spotty Otter on 13th Mar 2025
This week marks Sign Language Week, an important time to celebrate and raise awareness about the richness of sign language and the Deaf community. At Spotty Otter, we believe that nature should be accessible to everyone, and we’re proud to support adventurers of all abilities in exploring the great outdoors.
Sign Language Week, led by the British Deaf Association (BDA), highlights the importance of British Sign Language (BSL) and its role in communication, culture, and identity for the Deaf community. It’s a time to encourage inclusivity and to recognise that communication comes in many forms, whether through spoken words, hand signs, or assistive technology.
Spotty Otter Ambassador: Proving That Adventure Has No Limits
One of our amazing Spotty Otter Ambassadors, is an inspiration to us all. Born profoundly deaf, she proudly wears cochlear implants to help her communicate, but she also embraces sign language as part of her identity. Her passion for the outdoors is unstoppable, whether she’s climbing, hiking, or splashing in puddles, she proves that adventure has no limits. Her journey reminds us that nature is for everyone, and we’re so proud to have her as part of the Spotty Otter family.
This Sign Language Week, we encourage everyone to take a moment to learn more about BSL and how we can all be more inclusive in our communication. Whether it’s learning a few basic signs, supporting Deaf-led initiatives, or simply being more mindful of accessibility, small steps can make a big difference.
Let’s continue to celebrate diversity, break down barriers, and make the great outdoors a place where every child can thrive!
