Join the Adventure: 5 Ways to Celebrate Great Big Green Week with Spotty Otter
Posted by Spotty Otter on 3rd Jun 2025
Great Big Green Week (8–16 June 2025) is the UK’s biggest celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. At Spotty Otter, we believe there’s no better way to connect with our planet than by getting outdoors with our little adventurers.
Here are five fun, eco-friendly ways your family can join in — Otter-style!
1. Mini Wild Garden Mission
Turn a corner of your garden or balcony into a bug hav
en. Plant bee-friendly flowers, set up a bug hotel, or simply leave a patch of grass to grow wild. It’s a brilliant way for kids to learn about biodiversity and you’ll love seeing who moves in!
Otter tip: Use upcycled containers or old boots as planters for a quirky eco-twist.
2. Nature Treasure Hunt
Create a simple scavenger hunt using things found in nature, a feather, a pinecone, something round and green. Head to your local park or woods and explore together.
Otter bonus: Award a “Nature Hero” badge (homemade, of course!) at the end.
3. Eco-Challenge Day
Choose a day where the whole family takes on eco-friendly missions: walk or cycle instead of driving, go plastic-free for lunch, pick up litter, or create something new from recycled materials.
Otter idea: Share your mini-missions on social media to inspire others using #SpottyOtterAdventures
4. Storytime in the Wild
Take your favourite nature-themed book outside and read it under a tree or on a picnic blanket. Books like The Gruffalo, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, or The Lorax spark environmental imagination.
Otter extra: Encourage little ones to make up their own stories about animals they spot!
5. Hug a Tree
It’s simple, joyful, and surprisingly grounding. Hugging a tree helps children connect with nature in a gentle, mindful way. You can even turn it into a game: feel the bark, smell the leaves, listen for rustling sounds and give your tree a name!
Otter love: Ask your little explorer how hugging the tree made them feel- calm, happy, tingly?
