Red Squirrel Awareness Week: Let’s Protect Our Woodland Friends!
Posted by Spotty Otter on 30th Sep 2025
At Spotty Otter, we’re passionate about the great outdoors, and that means caring for the wildlife that makes our woodlands so magical. This week is Red Squirrel Awareness Week, and it’s the perfect time to shine a light on one of the UK’s most charming but threatened native species.
Meet the Red Squirrel
With their tufted ears, russet-red fur, and bushy tails, red squirrels are a rare and wonderful sight
across the UK. Once common throughout the country, their numbers have declined dramatically over the last century largely due to habitat loss and competition from the non-native grey squirrel.
Why Are Red Squirrels at Risk?
The biggest threat to red squirrels is the spread of grey squirrels, which were introduced from North America in the 19th century. Greys carry a virus (squirrelpox) that’s harmless to them but often deadly to reds. They also outcompete red squirrels for food and habitat.
Today, red squirrels are mostly found in pockets of Scotland, Northern England, Northern Ireland, and parts of Wales, with conservation efforts working hard to protect and restore their populations.
How You Can Help
Whether you live near red squirrel habitats or just love the idea of protecting our native wildlife, there are plenty of ways to get involved:
-
Support local wildlife charities like the Red Squirrel Survival Trust or Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels.
-
Report sightings (both red and grey squirrels) to local wildlife groups to help with conservation mapping.
-
Be a responsible explorer – when you're out and about, stick to trails and keep dogs under control to avoid disturbing wildlife.
-
Educate little adventurers – teaching children about red squirrels helps inspire the next generation of nature lovers.
Adventure with Purpose
At Spotty Otter, we believe that outdoor play and wildlife conservation go hand in hand. That’s why our gear is designed to help your little ones explore the world responsibly, rain or shine. Because when children fall in love with nature, they grow up wanting to protect it.
