Spooky Outdoor Activities for Kids: A Spotty Otter Guide

Posted by Spotty Otter on 7th Oct 2024

Spooky season is upon us, and what better way to celebrate Halloween than with some fun, outdoor activities for kids? At Spotty Otter, we love encouraging little adventurers to get outside, no matter the season! From crisp autumn leaves to chilly, misty air, autumn is the perfect time for kids to explore the outdoors—dressed in their Spotty Otter gear, of course.

Here’s a list of Halloween-themed outdoor activities to get your little ones in the spooky spirit while keeping them active and entertained this October:

1. Pumpkin Treasure Hunt

Why stick to an indoor scavenger hunt when you can take it outdoors? Hide mini pumpkins, spooky toys, or wrapped sweets around your garden or local park. Give your kids clues or a treasure map and let them search for hidden Halloween surprises! Bonus points if you can carve mini faces into the pumpkins or paint them with glow-in-the-dark paint for an extra eerie effect.

Top Tip: Spotty Otter waterproofs and wellies are perfect for keeping your little ones warm and dry as they hunt for treasure, even if the weather is wet and chilly.

2. Leaf Monster Creations

After a woodland walk or time spent in the garden, collect some of those beautifully coloured autumn leaves. Then, back at home or in the park, let your kids use their imaginations to transform the leaves into spooky creatures like leaf monsters or ghosts. They can glue the leaves onto paper, add googly eyes, and draw on monster mouths.

Take it outdoors: Lay out a picnic blanket and turn it into a mobile crafting station, letting your little monsters create in nature.

3. Ghostly Glow Stick Tag

When dusk falls, it’s time for some glow-in-the-dark fun. Use glow sticks to create glowing wristbands, necklaces, or headbands for each player. One person is “It” and chases the others in a classic game of tag. The twist? It’s much spookier in the dark with glow sticks lighting the way!

Safety first: Make sure your little ones are dressed in visible gear, like Spotty Otter’s reflective jackets, to keep them safe as they play into the evening.

4. Haunted Nature Trail

Turn your next nature walk into a spooky adventure! Create a "haunted trail" through your local woods or park by adding hidden Halloween decorations along the way. You can place fake cobwebs, plastic spiders, or hanging ghosts in the trees. Challenge your kids to spot as many creepy crawlies and spooky decorations as they can.

Pro Tip: Bundle your kids up in Spotty Otter base layers and jackets to keep them cosy as they explore.

5. Pumpkin Bowling

Create your own Halloween bowling game using mini pumpkins and spooky pins (you can use toilet rolls painted as ghosts or monsters). Set up the pins in your garden or on the driveway, and see how many your little ones can knock down with their pumpkin “bowling ball.” It’s a great way to get the whole family involved in a bit of Halloween fun!

6. Spider Web Obstacle Course

Create an outdoor obstacle course with a Halloween twist. Use string or yarn to create a “spider web” between trees or posts, and have your little ones carefully navigate through the web without touching the strings. You can add in other Halloween-themed challenges, like jumping over “bats” (black balloons) or crawling under "ghosts" (sheets hung from branches).

7. Campfire Ghost Stories

Nothing says Halloween like spooky ghost stories around a crackling fire. If you have a safe outdoor space, gather your family around a fire pit with marshmallows for roasting, hot chocolate, and warm blankets. Encourage your kids to come up with their own ghost stories, or read classic tales to set the Halloween mood. It’s a perfect way to wind down after a day of outdoor fun.

8. Halloween Night Walk

For families who love the night sky, a Halloween evening walk can be a magical experience. Wrap up warm and head out with torches or lanterns to explore your local woods or park. Look out for nocturnal animals, listen to the rustling of the leaves, and see if you can spot the moon peeking through the trees. Add a spooky twist by pointing out shadows and shapes that resemble creepy creatures!

9. DIY Spooky Scarecrow

Get crafty with the kids by making a spooky scarecrow to guard your garden. Gather old clothes, straw, and a pumpkin for the head. Let the kids decorate the scarecrow’s face to make it as scary (or silly) as they like. It’s a fun, hands-on way to decorate your outdoor space for Halloween.

10. Conker Spider Craft

For a simple yet spooky outdoor craft, use collected conkers to create little spiders. All you need is some black pipe cleaners and googly eyes. Let your kids poke the pipe cleaners into the conkers to make legs, glue on the eyes, and voilà—tiny conker spiders! You can hide them around the garden or inside the house for a little Halloween prank.

Halloween doesn't have to be all about candy and costumes indoors—there’s a whole world of fun waiting outside! With these outdoor activities, you and your little adventurers can enjoy the crisp autumn air, get a little spooky, and most importantly, make memories together.

Don’t forget to dress your little ones in their Spotty Otter gear, ensuring they stay warm and dry no matter what the weather brings. Whether you're carving pumpkins, exploring haunted trails, or simply playing in the leaves, Spotty Otter will keep your little explorers ready for anything this Halloween.
