Wear your odd socks for World Down Syndrome Day

Posted by Spotty Otter on 18th Mar 2024

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), celebrated on March 21st, holds significant global importance as it has been officially recognised by the United Nations since 2012. This day serves as a powerful platform for raising awareness about Down syndrome and advocating for the rights, inclusion, and well-being of individuals with Down syndrome worldwide.

The choice of March 21st as the designated day for WDSD is deeply symbolic. It represents the uniqueness of Down syndrome, as the date aligns with the 21st day of the 3rd month. This numerical alignment serves as a poignant reminder of the genetic condition, wherein individuals have a triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, leading to the characteristic features and challenges associated with Down syndrome.

Meet Jakey, a delightful addition to our Spotty Otter family! Jakey joined us on the sandy shores for an unforgettable photoshoot last year, where his infectious smiles and boundless energy brought an extra sparkle to the day. As a true adventurer at heart, Jakey fearlessly embraced every moment of the shoot, immersing himself in the experience with sheer joy and enthusiasm.

Since its inception, WDSD has grown into a global movement, with communities, organisations, and individuals coming together to promote understanding, acceptance, and respect for individuals with Down syndrome. Through various initiatives, events, and awareness campaigns, WDSD aims to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and foster a more inclusive and supportive society for people with Down syndrome.

As we observe World Down Syndrome Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to promoting diversity, celebrating differences, and advocating for the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of ability. Together, let us strive to create a world where everyone is valued, accepted, and allowed to thrive.

This year 2024, the WDSD theme is the message that they are asking supporters around the world to share on and around 21 March. It's incredibly simple to participate and contribute to raising awareness for individuals like our friend Eleanor, who will proudly wear her mismatched socks on Thursday 21st March 2024!

Eleanor's Mum @the_mantons shared this with us.

"Our daughter, Eleanor was born in April 2018 and soon after her birth we received a diagnosis of DS, although shocked at first, I quickly started researching and found the most comfort in social media platforms and other families that were raising children with DS. Before Eleanor was born, I’d almost given up on social media but I soon found myself becoming part of the most amazing community that totally understood my thoughts and feelings. Very quickly we started raising awareness ourselves. We love to share the positives of our lives and just how we’re like any other family, but we have an added extra (chromosome!)."
